Fashioned Pancakes

Here’s a classic recipe for old-fashioned pancakes that are fluffy and delicious—perfect for a comforting breakfast or a lazy weekend brunch. These pancakes are simple to make and are a favorite for both kids and adults alike.

Old-Fashioned Pancakes Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (sifted for lighter pancakes)

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 1/4 cups milk (can be substituted with buttermilk for tangier flavor and fluffier texture)

1 large egg

3 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted, plus more for cooking)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, for added flavor)

Equipment:

Mixing bowls

Whisk

Skillet or griddle

Spatula

Measuring cups and spoons

INSTRUCTIONS:

Dry Ingredients:

In a large bowl, whisk together the sifted flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

Wet Ingredients:

In another bowl, beat the milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract together until well combined.

Make the Batter:

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir using the whisk until just combined. It’s important not to overmix; a few lumps are okay. Overmixing can make the pancakes tough.

Preheat Your Skillet:

Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and brush with a little butter to prevent sticking.

Cook the Pancakes:

For each pancake, pour about 1/4 cup of batter onto the hot skillet. Cook until bubbles appear on the surface and the edges start to look set, about 2-3 minutes.

Flip the pancake using a spatula and cook for another 2 minutes on the other side, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Serve Hot:

Serve the pancakes hot off the griddle with your choice of toppings such as maple syrup, fresh berries, sliced bananas, or a dollop of whipped cream.

Tips for the Best Pancakes:

Consistency of Batter: The thickness of the batter will affect the thickness of the pancakes. Adjust the amount of milk slightly for thicker or thinner pancakes based on your preference.

Keeping Pancakes Warm: If you’re making a large batch, keep the finished pancakes warm in an oven set to a low temperature (around 200°F or 90°C) until ready to serve.

Add-Ins: Feel free to stir in ingredients like blueberries, chocolate chips, or sliced bananas directly into the batter for extra flavor.

These old-fashioned pancakes are not only a delightful breakfast choice but also a versatile base for many creative toppings and mix-ins. Enjoy crafting your perfect pancake breakfast!
